HOMEMADE // zero waste and vegan face mask

Hello everybody! I haven’t made a face mask in ages like really we’re talking pre-vegan ages. The face masks I remember making always involved honey, which I don’t buy anymore, or they involved avocados, which I only use when I dumpster dive them. So it’s been a while since my last face mask, but I had some ideas and ingredients that I wanted to use, here is what I ended up with.

You’ll need:

  • 2 parts baking soda
  • 2 parts bentonite clay
  • 1 part activated charcoal
  • 1 park ground tumeric
  • 3-4 parts rose water or distilled water

All the components have their own amazing benefits. Activated charcoal I great for extracting impurities from your skin, bentonite clay has proven beneficial in terms of acne relief and turmeric is great for healing and lightening scars and it tightens the skin as well. Moreover, baking soda is a great exfoliant, as well as a great cleaning agent, seriously it can do anything. Lastly, rose water has anti-inflammatory properties, and can reduce redness and swelling.

Mix the ingredients together in a bowl and apply a thick layer on your face. Remember to stay clear of nostrils, mouth, and eyes. Let it sit for about 30-45 minutes, or until dry. Then you can rinse it off. Go over your face with a konjac sponge, or another natural sponge. Rinse with cold water.

I got the bentonite clay in bulk in Tinc in Aarhus, the activated charcoal is also from bulk, bought in the soap and wellness store Isangs in Copenhagen. The turmeric is from LØS and also bulk. The rosewater I randomly found in a Middle Eastern greengrocer in a glass bottle, a great place to look for products in alternative packaging btw. The baking soda is from the same store, but a rather common brand that also comes plastic-free, in a cardboard box.

  1. i tried this mask and left it for about 45 mins until it was dry but after I washed it, there was yellow residue from the cumin on my face. I literally looked yellow 😐

    1. Cumin? 🤔 The turmeric should not have stained your skin, it did not stain mine, and other people have said the same. I am sorry that has happened to you though, whenever I get turmeric stain on my fingers it goes away, so I hope you’re alright again? I don’t know why that happened, perhaps the mask was too wet?

      1. Yeah, I meant turmeric *facepalm*. Maybe mine is erm… fake? and that why it stained my skin, who knows… BUT even without it, the combination of baking soda, bentonite clay and activated charcoal is really good!
